Plot summary
Frankie Christopher, a New York sports promoter, is at a restaurant with the fading actor Robin Ray and the gossip columnist Larry Evans when he meets Vicky Lynn, a waitress. His friends dare him to turn her into a star, and with their help he does. Vicky signs with a Hollywood producer and tells Christopher, in the apartment she shares with Jill, that she is leaving. He reacts angrily, and the next morning Jill comes home to find her sister dead and Christopher beside the body. Detective Ed Cornell has no evidence to hold him, yet he is certain Christopher is the killer and hounds him, entering his home and other places without a warrant. Christopher asks Jill for help, though she had never liked him much.
