Plot summary
During the Civil War, three fur trappers, Jed Cooper, Gus and Mungo, are heading back from a trapping trip with a load of pelts when Red Cloud's warriors surround them and take their guns, horses and furs, ordering them off the land. They ride to Fort Shallan to claim compensation and meet Captain Glenn Riordan, who holds temporary command there. Riordan signs the three on as scouts and pays them in advance; the money buys a night of drinking, and Jed barges into the quarters of Corinna Marston, whose husband, Colonel Frank Marston, is posted at Fort Medford. When the telegraph line is wrecked, Riordan sends Gus and Mungo to Medford, and Jed, thinking the errand a suicide mission, goes after them.
