Betty Grable
Biography
Betty Grable was an American actress, dancer, singer, and model who began appearing in films in 1929. Born in St. Louis, she trained with Neely Dickson at the Hollywood Community Theater and later held contracts with RKO and Paramount during the 1930s, where she often played college students in B pictures. Her 1939 Broadway success in Du Barry Was a Lady drew the interest of 20th Century-Fox, which cast her in Down Argentine Way (1940). She became the studio's biggest film star across the next decade, headlining Technicolor musicals alongside Victor Mature, Don Ameche, John Payne, and Tyrone Power. American movie exhibitors voted her the top box-office draw in 1943. Notable films include A Yank in the R.A.F. (1941), I Wake Up Screaming (1941), Song of the Islands (1942), and How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). Grable retired from screen acting in 1955 and continued performing onstage and on television, including Hello, Dolly on Broadway in 1967.

Grable started her film career in 1929 when she was 12, and she was later fired from a contract because she had signed it with a false identification.
A role that slipped away
In 1955, Grable made an attempt at an acting comeback, aiming for the film version of Guys and Dolls that Samuel Goldwyn was making. She wanted Miss Adelaide, but Vivian Blaine, who had the role on Broadway, was chosen instead.
About the name
In 1930, when she was 13, Grable signed with producer Samuel Goldwyn using the pseudonym Frances Dean, which made her one of the original Goldwyn Girls.
