Plot summary
Akhoba leads the hunters of the Rock Tribe, and his son Tumak asks for the right to make his first kill. Back at the cave, the strongest eat first, then the women and children, and only a few of the old ones get what is left. When Tumak refuses to give up his share, father and son fight and Tumak goes over a cliff. A mastodon knocks the tree he has climbed into a river, and he drifts unconscious until Loana of the Shell Tribe finds him. Her people set out vegetables and let the children, the women and the elders eat before anyone else, and they share what they have. Tumak, used to the Rock Tribe's ways, watches them with confusion.

- The film's dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals were played by real animals in costume, among them a pig in a rubber Triceratops suit, a man in an Allosaurus suit, and Asian elephants given fake tusks and fur to look like mastodonts.
- The film's scenes of animal cruelty, including an alligator with a Dimetrodon-like sail glued to its back set to fight a tegu that was left severely injured, led the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to ban many animal treatments used in its production.
- D. W. Griffith disagreed with producer Hal Roach and left the film, but Roach insisted Griffith directed some of the completed scenes, which would make it Griffith's last active production; cast members recall him directing only the screen and costume tests.
