  1. A role that slipped away

Egan was Rod Serling's first choice to narrate The Twilight Zone, but contractual issues prevented it, and Serling narrated the show himself rather than pick another actor.

  2. A change of course

Egan left in 1943 to serve in the United States Army during World War II, where he taught judo and knife fighting. He was in the Philippines for a year and left the service holding the rank of captain.

  3. Early training

Egan taught public speaking at Northwestern University, where he took part in thirty stage productions on campus. A Warner Bros talent scout, Solly Bioano, noticed him there and encouraged him to try Hollywood.

  4. Big break

According to Egan, a casting director ordered him to remove his shirt and gave him a small part in Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954), playing a gladiator up against Victor Mature. Edward Small then handed him his first leading role, in Wicked Woman (1953).
