Biography

Debra Paget is a retired American actress who started performing professionally at age eight and gained stage experience as a teenager. Born in Denver and raised in Los Angeles, she signed with 20th Century Fox after her first notable film role, in the film noir Cry of the City (1948). Her first starring vehicle at Fox was Broken Arrow (1950), in which she played a Native American maiden, a kind of part she played again in White Feather (1955). Fox loaned her to Paramount for Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1956), her most successful film, and she appeared opposite Elvis Presley in Love Me Tender (1956). She later headlined Fritz Lang's The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb (1959). Her final films were two for Roger Corman, Tales of Terror (1962) and The Haunted Palace (1963). In 1987 the Motion Picture and Television Fund gave her its Golden Boot Award.

Paget was 16 when she played the Native American maiden Sonseeahray in Broken Arrow opposite James Stewart, who was 42 at the time.
A role that slipped away
Paget auditioned in a blonde wig for the title role in Sheena, Queen of the Jungle in 1953, competing with Anita Ekberg and Irish McCalla, and lost the part to McCalla.
A first
After Princess of the Nile was released, Paget got more fan mail at 20th Century-Fox during that year than anyone except Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable.
First role
Paget began working professionally when she was 8 years old. At 13 she gained stage experience by acting in a 1946 production of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Beyond film
A talented dancer and singer, Paget also found success with a nightclub act she performed now and then at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
