Plot summary

The Canadian Pacific Railway has reached the Rocky Mountains and stopped there, and surveyor Tom Andrews is mapping a route through them. Fur trader Dirk Rourke, who holds the trade in the region, wants the line stopped, and Cagle works beside Andrews at the construction camp. Andrews rides to Calgary, where Rourke tells a meeting that the railway will ruin the area's trade. Andrews argues that the line will benefit everyone and that Rourke only fears losing his monopoly, and the two fight until Père Lacombe breaks it up. Cecille Gautier, his girlfriend in Calgary, wants him to stay, and her father sides with Rourke. Andrews returns to the mountains to finish the survey. At the camp, Dr. Edith Cabot, a pacifist, disapproves of the violence around the work.
