Plot summary

Jeptha Marr has built up the town of Pawnee, Kansas, and its freight company. A new railroad, run by Stephen Bent, puts his business at risk. Marr sends Gideon Skene, his right-hand man, to disrupt Bent's work. Bent answers Marr's opposition in an unusual way. He courts Marr's daughter Vinnie. Vinnie returns to Pawnee after a long absence and finds that she already knows Stephen. A third railroad interest, led by Champ Clanton, presses into the same territory.
