Plot summary
Valentine "Snakeskin" Xavier plays guitar and wears the snakeskin jacket that gives him his nickname. After a police raid on a New Orleans club where he was playing lands him in jail on New Year's Eve, he leaves the city for a small Southern town, deciding on his thirtieth birthday to give up his drifting life. Vee Talbot, wife of the local sheriff, helps him find work in a rundown store run by Lady Torrance, whose husband Jabe lies ill in the apartment above it. Lady plans to open a decorated confectionery wing beside the store. Carol Cutrere, an outcast who knows Valentine from New Orleans, sets her sights on him.

- Because Anna Magnani's Italian accent became stronger, and finally incomprehensible, under emotional conditions, she had to come back after shooting to loop about 50 percent of her lines.
- Anna Magnani and Marlon Brando were both originally offered the lead parts in the Broadway production of Tennessee Williams's Orpheus Descending but turned them down; the roles were played on Broadway by Maureen Stapleton and Cliff Robertson.
- Marlon Brando wrote in his memoirs that he rejected the Broadway role because he did not want to return to the stage, and that he agreed to make the film because he was divorcing his first wife and needed money.
