Bill Tyler and Henry Frapp are mountain men working the frontier as the fur trade dies out. They trap beaver, drink at the mountain men's rendezvous, and try to sell their pelts, or plews, to Fontenelle, a French fur trader. Tyler keeps hunting a legendary valley in Blackfoot territory that is said to be thick with beaver. Running Moon, who has left her abusive husband, the Blackfoot warrior Heavy Eagle, meets the two trappers. Bill means to bring her to safety at the rendezvous, but she refuses to leave. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Charlton Heston said that during post-production much of the inspiring footage was cut and the editors instead focused on the raw action between his character and Brian Keith's, which he said violated his agreement with Ransohoff about what the picture should be about.
- Charlton Heston said the film audiences saw was not the film he and his son conceived or shot: they compromised, and his son's script, which emphasized the autumnal recognition the trappers earned, was much darker.
