Plot summary
Abel Frake, a farmer in Brunswick, Iowa, is certain his Hampshire pig Blue Boy will take first prize in the state fair hog contest, so he wagers five dollars with his neighbor Fred Cramer. His wife Melissa cooks pickles and mincemeat for the food contest, and although she doubts her chances, Abel secretly adds apple brandy to the mincemeat and she adds what is left. Their daughter Margy reconnects with Harry Ware, a childhood friend who cannot come because of his dairy farm, and their son Wayne returns from college for the trip. At the fair, Wayne meets Emily Joyce, a trapeze artist, at a hoop toss game, and Margy rides the roller coaster beside Pat Gilbert, a newspaper reporter.

- When Fox re-released State Fair in 1935, the Hays Commission objected to the seduction storyline between Norman Foster and Sally Eilers and insisted on deleting a scene where the pair are heard off screen while the camera shows a rumpled bed and a discarded negligee; that cut has never been restored.
