Plot summary
Marian Washburn is a popular singer whose voice fails without explanation, throwing the club where she works into uncertainty. Her pianist and boyfriend, Luke Jordan, helps promote a younger singer, Susan Caldwell, to replace her temporarily. Luke later tells the police how they met Susan. After an audition, Susan collapses from starvation in front of Luke and Marian. They take her home and hear her voice. Susan receives early praise but quits after only a few performances. Soon afterward, Susan is shot and critically injured in the apartment she shares with Marian on Park Avenue. The police arrive, and Marian quickly becomes a suspect.
