Tom Savini

Biography

Born in Pittsburgh, Tom Savini is an American makeup effects artist who has also acted, performed stunts, and directed. He made his name with George A. Romero, starting with a wrist slash in Martin and the severed limbs and bite marks of Dawn of the Dead. He worked on Friday the 13th, Maniac, The Burning, and The Prowler, earning the nickname Sultan of Splatter, and won a Saturn Award for Day of the Dead. Savini also appeared on screen in Dawn of the Dead, Knightriders (1981), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Planet Terror (2007), Machete (2010), Machete Kills (2013), and as a shop teacher in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012). He directed the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, episodes of Tales from the Darkside, and a segment of The Theatre Bizarre (2011), and he operates a special makeup effects program at the Douglas Education Center.

Big break
Savini's big break came from working with George A. Romero, the Pittsburgh filmmaker. For the opening scenes of Martin (1977), Savini created a wrist-slashing effect that looked convincing.
Early training
After his tour in Vietnam, Savini studied at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was the first undergraduate to receive a full fellowship in acting and directing.
A change of course
Savini was a combat photographer in the Vietnam War. He shot images of damage to machines and people, and to cope he tried to view it as special effects.
Behind the camera
Savini is in charge of the Tom Savini's Special Make-Up Effects Program, taught at the Douglas Education Center in Monessen, Pennsylvania. He passes along movie make-up effects job offers he gets to the school's students and graduates.
Own stunts
Tom Savini trained in fencing and gymnastics. A bullwhip is another skill he has mastered, and he is able to perform motorcycle stunts too.
