Plot summary
Zack Brown and Miri Linky became friends in the first grade and now share an apartment. His wages from a coffee shop and hers from a mall job do not cover the rent, and the water and then the electricity are cut off. At their ten-year high school reunion, Miri tries to seduce former classmate Bobby Long, and Zack gets to talking with Brandon St. Randy, Bobby's boyfriend and an adult film actor. A clip of Miri dressing for the reunion goes online. Zack talks a reluctant Miri into making their own pornographic film. Zack's co-worker Delaney becomes the producer, renting equipment and a building for a Star Wars parody called Star Whores. The two agree to treat their scene as a job that will not affect their friendship.

- The MPAA banned a September 2008 poster that suggested Zack and Miri were performing oral sex on each other, so the US poster used stick figures instead. Newspapers, TV stations, cable channels and city governments also refused ads with "porno" in the title, some after complaints about ads at baseball stadiums and bus stops.
- Kevin Smith spent over 13 years trying to use Live's "Hold Me Up" in a film. The band kept it out of the Mallrats test screening to save it as a potential single off the album after Throwing Copper, and Smith was denied again while editing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
- Kevin Smith wrote the female lead for Rosario Dawson, but she signed on to film Eagle Eye instead and its shooting schedule clashed with his. Smith wrote the part of Zack for Seth Rogen after seeing him in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
- The MPAA first handed the film an NC-17 rating for "some graphic sexuality". Kevin Smith submitted two recuts, was told to drop a small 14-frame shot, and appealed the rating, which went back to the MPAA for another screening.
- Smith shot a scene at the Monroeville Mall, the setting of Dawn of the Dead, and gave a cameo in it to that film's effects artist Tom Savini. Smith called shooting there "as close to a zombie movie as I'll ever get."
- More than two years after release, Kevin Smith said the film was "literally me adulterating my own story ... the story of how I made Clerks, with porn", his own experience of making Clerks was the basis.
- Smith said on release that the film was not in the View Askewniverse, avoiding even the Nails cigarette brand, but later retconned it in by casting Justin Long as Brandon St. Randy in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The character was never named because the Weinstein Company owned him.
