Fred Williamson
Biography
Fred Williamson is an American actor, filmmaker, and former professional football player who became a leading man in 1970s blaxploitation and action cinema. Born in Gary, Indiana, he played college football at Northwestern and spent the 1960s in the American Football League, where he was a three-time All-Star and won a league championship. He retired from football in 1968 and began with guest appearances and supporting parts in film and television. His first starring part was in the 1972 Western The Legend of Nigger Charley, and he returned for two sequels. He also played Tommy Gibbs in Black Caesar (1973) and Hell Up in Harlem (1973), and appeared in Three the Hard Way (1974), Bucktown (1975), and The Inglorious Bastards (1978). He later directed and produced his own features, beginning as producer on Boss Nigger, and founded Po' Boy Productions.

About the name
Williamson earned his nickname "the Hammer" during 49ers training camp, when a coach asked him to stop hammering his teammates after he was switched to defense.
Behind the camera
In the mid-1970s Williamson moved to Rome and founded his own company, Po' Boy Productions, which turned out action films including Adios Amigo and Death Journey, both of which he starred in and directed.
