Plot summary
Jessica Valdemar is married to Ernest Valdemar, a wealthy man fifteen years her senior who is terminally ill. Ernest has asked his lawyer Steven to sell several of his assets for cash, money that Jessica would be able to reach. Steven does as asked, though he warns her that the authorities would look into her if the estate were not settled first. What Steven does not know is that Jessica and Dr. Robert Hoffman have a plan of their own, using hypnosis to make Ernest do whatever they wish. In the companion story, Rod Usher works as a crime scene photographer for the police. He comes home to find that Annabel, the girlfriend he lives with, has taken in a black cat that is hostile to him from the start.
