Adolphe Menjou
Biography
Adolphe Menjou was an American actor who moved from silent films into talkies and became a suave leading man in the 1920s. Born in Pittsburgh, he earned an engineering degree at Cornell University and made his screen debut in 1916 with The Blue Envelope Mystery. His supporting role in A Woman of Paris: A Drama of Fate (1923) helped establish his image as an elegant man about town. His performance in The Front Page (1931) brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He starred in Morocco (1930) and took supporting parts in A Farewell to Arms (1932) and Morning Glory (1933), later appearing in A Star Is Born (1937). His later work included Roxie Hart (1942), State of the Union (1948), and a final lead in The Sniper (1952). He played the antagonist in Paths of Glory (1957) and finished with Pollyanna (1960). He was given a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.
