Plot summary
Eight-year-old Lillian Roth is pushed by her mother, Katie, to audition and act. As a young adult she gets an opportunity that launches a musical career, and twenty years on Katie is still managing her work and her choices. David Tredman, a friend from Lillian's childhood, is in a hospital, and the two fall in love. A lawyer for an entertainment company, David books her into large venues, the Palace Theatre among them. Katie fears that a man in Lillian's life will pull her away from her career, while David thinks Katie is working her too hard. Lillian tells her mother she intends to marry him.
