Sterling Hayden
Biography
Sterling Hayden was an American actor who spent most of his career as a leading man and became associated with Westerns and film noir. Born in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, he appeared in John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950) as the tough guy Dix Handley, then in Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar (1954), a box office hit and cult favorite, and Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). The 1960s brought him supporting roles, notably General Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove (1964). Later roles included Captain McCluskey in The Godfather (1972), Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye (1973), and Russell Tinsworthy in 9 to 5 (1980). He also wrote an autobiography, Wanderer, and a novel, Voyage. Hayden died in 1986.
