Plot summary
Frank Miniver is a guard at an Oregon state prison, known as Fast-Walking. He sells marijuana and adds to his pay by sending prostitutes to Mexican laborers from a convenience store that belongs to his cousin Evie. At the prison he keeps up with his other cousin, Wasco, an inmate who deals in women and narcotics on both sides of the walls and is trying to move into fraudulent banking, and who pushes a rival named Bullet to hand over his trade inside. Wasco's girlfriend Moke, on the outside, carries out his errands, among them seducing Frank. A political prisoner, William Galliot, arrives at the prison, and in an atmosphere already strained over race, Wasco makes plans to have him killed.
