Plot summary
Camp 47 holds the people the regime calls social deviants, sent there for re-education. Its commandant, Charles Thatcher, lets his guards brutalize the inmates, and once a year he stages a turkey shoot for himself and a circle of VIP guests: selected prisoners are released into the wilderness and told they will be freed if they survive a twelve-hour hunt. Fellow inmates Griffin and Dodge plot escapes, unaware that the guards watch their attempts. This year's chosen prey include Chris Walters, a shopkeeper arrested for helping a rebel, Rita Daniels, held on suspicion of prostitution, and Paul Anders, a dissident broadcaster who has escaped other camps, alongside Dodge.

- During production, director Brian Trenchard-Smith poured beer over executive producer David Hemmings's head in the production office after Hemmings mocked him in front of his wife and newborn son; Hemmings was more careful with him afterwards.
- The MPA required New World Pictures to make huge edits to Turkey Shoot's graphic violence, gore and rape scenes to get an R rating, and threatened to ban the film entirely if the less-edited cut was used instead.
- Lynda Stoner accepted her role on condition that she do no nudity, but discovered on set that it was required; after pressure she compromised with a back shot, which she always regretted.
- Brian Trenchard-Smith's original script was like I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang meets The Most Dangerous Game, set in the Depression-era Deep South, but tax-based financing required the story be set in Australia.
- Turkey Shoot's shooting schedule was slashed from 44 days to 28 just before filming began near Cairns in Far North Queensland.
