Plot summary
Marwella Harbison keeps a strange plant in her greenhouse, a specimen from a volcanic island newly formed off Micronesia that began drooping overnight for no reason she can name. Handyman Fred Adams pricks a finger on it, though it has no thorns, and collapses beside his truck. At Hill Valley Hospital, Dr. Rachel Carson and Dr. Judith Glass find gangrene already at the wound. Detective Jim Bishop brings in his partner, shot at close range during a stakeout. Fred convulses and vomits an insect pupa, which the staff seal in a bell jar in the hospital lab. Rachel orders checkups for everyone, including Jim, hospital director Roger Levering refuses a quarantine, and entomologist Elliot Jacobs is called in to identify the specimen.
