Plot summary
On the Old Highway in 1972, a family in a motorhome gives a lift to a stranded man whose yellow truck has run out of gas. Thirty-five years later, Corporal Tom Hilts comes back from Iraq to Argyle, Texas, a year after his brother Jesse and Jesse's girlfriend Nicole vanished on a drive to California. Tom sets out west with his girlfriend Marilyn and with Jared, a friend of Nicole's who long carried a crush on her. They stop for gas, and Tom shows the attendant a photograph of the missing pair. The attendant remembers them and warns the three to be careful. Jared then spots Nicole's horse-riding badge, and the attendant says he picked it up a mile away on the Old Highway.
