Plot summary
Ed Gein grows up on a farm in rural Wisconsin, mistreated by his strict mother, Augusta, and his alcoholic father, George. After George dies of a heart attack and Augusta dies of a stroke, Ed is left alone. He sinks into depression, sealing off his mother's room while the rest of the house falls into decay. To support himself, he receives government subsidies and earns money from leasing land and babysitting. At night he visits the Plainfield Cemetery, exhumes recently buried elderly women, tries without success to revive them, and then uses their remains to decorate his home. Hallucinations of Augusta begin commanding him to kill women she considers sinful, and his grip on reality weakens.
