Plot summary
Steve Clark's family leaves Chicago for Cradle Bay, a quiet island in Puget Sound, after the suicide of his older brother Allen. On his first day at the local high school he meets Gavin Strick and Rachel Wagner, two outcasts who steer clear of the Blue Ribbons, a clique of clean-cut high achievers in matching jackets who gather at the Yogurt Shoppe. School psychologist Dr. Edgar Caldicott invites Steve to join the group's workshop. Gavin warns him to stay away, saying a sinister force is at work in the town, and that he saw a Ribbon kill a classmate who is now missing while Officer Cox looked on. When Gavin's parents sign him up for the program, he comes back to school changed.
