John Vernon
Biography
John Vernon was a Canadian actor who became a television star in his home country before building a long Hollywood career as villainous authority figures. Born in Zehner, Saskatchewan, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and acted in CBC Television dramas, making his 1956 film debut as the voice of Big Brother in an adaptation of 1984. He found critical success as Dr. Steve Wojeck in the CBC series Wojeck, then moved to the United States, where he played Rico Parra in Hitchcock's Topaz (1969), the mayor of San Francisco in Dirty Harry (1971), Fletcher in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Dean Wormer in Animal House (1978). Other films included Point Blank (1967), Herbie Goes Bananas (1980), Airplane II: The Sequel (1982), and Ernest Goes to Camp (1987). He later did voice work as Rupert Thorne on Batman: The Animated Series and Thunderbolt Ross on The Incredible Hulk.

Vernon's first film role came in 1956, providing the voice of Big Brother in Michael Anderson's version of George Orwell's 1984, which starred Edmond O'Brien.
Early training
Vernon studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts and London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After that, he acted live on stage for CBC Television's dramatic programs.
First role
In 1964, Vernon made his Broadway debut as DeSoto in The Royal Hunt of the Sun, appearing opposite Christopher Plummer and David Carradine.
Beyond film
Vernon spent a season in 1974 at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which is located in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. There he took on the role of Malvolio.
