Plot summary
Keegan Lawrence, a journalist, returns to her hometown after her sister Linda is pushed from a second-story window by a ski-masked intruder. Officer Roger Lane investigates whether the death was an accident, a suicide, or a murder. At a diner Keegan runs into high school friends, among them Randy and Sooty Lane, who is married to Roger. She visits her estranged mother, Marge, and at a flag football game notices Billy Owens, a classmate and Vietnam veteran who now changes reels at the local movie theater and is close to Roger. A pool party ends with Randy drowned in the pool. Keegan and Roger begin a romance as the attacks continue.
