Plot summary
Roy Darpinian plans to join the military, though he and his father clash over it. Scott Foreman, who has a prosthetic leg, is engaged to Becky, and Ned Bleuer works at a small store in town. Roy's uncle offers the three of them his place in California for the summer, and they go, determined to meet Marilyn Monroe in person. In Hollywood they try one scheme after another to get near her, from a cow they try to make moo outside her house to a fast drive after her car. A group of men is also after Roy, and the friends spend part of the trip dodging them.

- Columbia Pictures held a nationwide search for a hearing-impaired actor to portray the deaf character Arturo Gallo, with thousands of deaf actors auditioning, but the role went to hearing actor Kurt Fuller. Producers said no deaf actor fit the "6 foot 3 and Italian-looking" description, and Columbia hired a sign language interpreter to train Fuller.
- The film, set in 1962, echoes the real 1953 trip of Gene Scanlon, who crossed America with a friend and had a date with Marilyn Monroe for which she paid the bill.
