Stan Lee
Biography
Stan Lee was a comic book writer and editor who became a publisher and producer. He started as an assistant at Timely Comics in 1939 and rose to become Marvel Comics' primary creative leader for two decades. He co-created Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and Daredevil, working with artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, bringing a naturalistic approach to superhero comics in the 1960s. In the 1970s he challenged the Comics Code Authority, and in the 1980s he pursued Marvel properties in other media. After retiring from Marvel in the 1990s, he remained a figurehead and appeared in cameo roles in films and television shows adapted from Marvel characters, receiving executive producer credit on many. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994. The Jack Kirby Hall of Fame inducted him in 1995, and he received the National Medal of Arts in 2008.
