Plot summary

Miles Morales lives in Brooklyn with his father Jefferson, a police officer, and his mother Rio, juggling a new private school with visits to his uncle Aaron. A radioactive spider bites him in an abandoned station, and he develops abilities he cannot yet command: his hands stick to everything and a voice fills his head. He returns to the station and finds a collider built by Wilson Fisk, who wants to reach other universes. The machine pulls spider-powered visitors from other dimensions into Miles's world, among them Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Peter Porker. Miles wants to send them home, and to prove he can carry the mask himself.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In an early version of the story, Miles Morales was not going to learn to be Spider-Man from Peter Parker but from an audio commentary by James Cameron and Tom Cruise.
  • The writers wanted a post-credits scene with all three live-action Spider-Man actors, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, but Sony canceled it, fearing confusion; Holland's part would have been a passerby at a train station saying "Hey, kid!" to Miles.
  • It took around a year for two animators to create just 10 seconds of footage that reflected the producers' vision, and the rest of the animation was built from there.
  • When it became clear the film could not be finished on time, the crew was expanded to 142 animators by August 2018 and peaked at 177, the largest animation crew Sony Pictures Imageworks had ever used on a film.
  • To look like a comic, the film was animated without motion blur, using an older 2D technique called motion smearing seen in the 1942 Looney Tunes short The Dover Boys; in the forest swing, Miles was animated at 12 frames per second to show his inexperience and Peter at 24 for smoother movement.
  • The film was the first non-Disney or Pixar winner of the Best Animated Feature Oscar since Rango in 2011, and only the sixth non-Disney/Pixar film ever to take the award.
  • Its animation techniques were reused in The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) and influenced the look of DreamWorks' The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, while Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah said it inspired the hand-drawn visual effects of the MCU series Ms. Marvel.
  • Brian Tyree Henry, 35 at the time, thought he was too young to play the father of a teenager, but took the role of Jefferson Davis after learning Miles Morales was the only black and Latino Spider-Man.
