Plot summary
In the 1960s, David Banner, a genetics researcher, works to improve human DNA. Colonel Thaddeus Ross forbids experiments on people, so David tests the work on himself. His son Bruce inherits the altered DNA. When Ross shuts the research down, David rigs the base's gamma reactor to explode; he is arrested and sent to a mental hospital, and four-year-old Bruce goes into foster care with Mrs. Krenzler, growing up believing both parents are dead. As an adult, Bruce is a scientist at the Berkeley Lab, studying nanomeds with Betty Ross, his girlfriend and the estranged daughter of Thaddeus Ross. Glenn Talbot, of the company Atheon, wants the research for self-healing soldiers. David reappears at the lab as a janitor. When a gammasphere malfunctions, Bruce saves his colleague Harper and survives a dose of gamma radiation.

- Mychael Danna's score was rejected by studio executives for its non-traditional approach, and Danny Elfman replaced him. Elfman's involvement was confirmed nearly three months before release, and he composed over two hours of music within 37 days.
- Director Ang Lee originally wanted the Hulk to be completely naked, but could not commit to nudity while keeping a PG-13 rating, so he settled for having the Hulk's underwear rip during the fight with the three super dogs.
- To mimic comic book panels, Ang Lee used a split-screen technique that required many more takes of individual scenes than usual. Dennis Muren and other ILM animators built the computer-generated Hulk using technology originally developed for the Dobby character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
- Edward Norton, who went on to play Bruce in The Incredible Hulk, was interested in the role here but turned it down because he was disappointed with the script. Tom Cruise was also offered the role and declined.
- Several very different actors circled the lead role: Billy Crudup was widely reported to have turned it down, Johnny Depp and Steve Buscemi were reportedly under consideration, and David Duchovny and Jeff Goldblum both auditioned.
- In March 1998 Universal put Hulk on hiatus because of its escalating $100 million budget, by which point twenty million dollars had already been spent on script development, computer animation and prosthetics work.
