Plot summary
A murder at a New York City museum brings Interpol agent Nathan Nelson to the scene, and he takes a rune he finds there home to study it. During a severe storm, with a pet chameleon nearby, the rune gives his daughter Maggie, an aspiring actress, the ability to change her appearance at will. Her new power belongs to the Chameliel, an ancient race that hides in plain sight by shifting shape, and a young Chameliel named Mosaic tells her about the race. Maggie also learns that another Chameliel, Maniken, is stealing the race's powerful stones from around the world.
