Plot summary
In the mid-19th century, Professor Abronsius, once of the University of Königsberg, travels through the wintry forests with his young apprentice Alfred in search of vampires. Alfred is clumsy and withdrawn, while the professor, old and frail, can barely stand the cold. The trail brings them to a small village in Transylvania, where frightened townspeople carry out rituals meant to keep an unseen evil away. They take rooms at the local inn, and Alfred grows fond of Sarah, the closely guarded daughter of the tavern keeper Yoine Shagal. When Count von Krolock takes Sarah from the inn, the two hunters follow the tracks through the snow to the Count's castle.

- For the American release, MGM head editor Margaret Booth and head of theatrical post-production Merle Chamberlain cut 12 minutes, added an animated prologue and re-dubbed the character of Professor Abronsius with a goofy, cartoony voice. That version was the one most commonly seen in the US until it vanished from circulation in the mid-1970s.
- A last-minute switch of location from Austria to Urtijëi, an Italian ski resort in the Dolomites, left so little time to revise the shooting schedule that the first month of outdoor filming became a series of ingenious improvisations, and European producer Gene Gutowski suspected that the Italian technicians were robbing the production blind.
- The Fearless Vampire Killers was Roman Polanski's first feature to be photographed in color, using a widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
