Plot summary
A kickabout with some boys on rough ground leaves Bob up on a high roof, and the fire brigade brings him down. He and Terry, both around thirty, visit the Fat Ox, their old pub, due for demolition together with the terraced streets where the two grew up. Bob, now middle-class and married to Thelma, is sentimental about the loss, while Terry, who has moved into a high-rise council flat, welcomes the city's redevelopment. Terry is divorced, his former wife living in West Germany. Bob has grown ambivalent about his own marriage. Terry takes up with Chris, a Finnish shop assistant at the local boutique, and Bob openly envies him. Thelma, seeing Terry as a threat to her marriage, sets about settling him down.

- The Likely Lads was the last screen appearance of James Bolam and Rodney Bewes together; Bewes said the pair had fallen out over something he had said in an interview and never spoken again, but Bolam denied there was any rift between them when Bewes died in November 2017.
- Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, who wrote the television series, had to stay in the United States while The Likely Lads was being filmed and so never visited the set; they said James Bolam insisted on extensive rewrites of their script.
- Terry's flat was filmed at Taunton Close, Willington Square, Wallsend, one of three blocks known locally as the "fourteen stories"; the blocks on the Coast Road were demolished in the 1990s.
