Plot summary
Mickey Raymond is an aspiring mystery writer who travels to Malta for a two-week stay to work on her first novel. She meets Terry Leonard, a handsome and mysterious American, and develops feelings for him. She also becomes caught up in an international plutonium smuggling ring. Events around her seem driven by her vivid writer's imagination as much as by real danger. A local police inspector, Stagnos, is seemingly one step behind.

- With Ronald Lacey playing Princess Aida, a 1982 article in Variety noted that Trenchcoat may have been the first Disney release to feature an openly homosexual character.
- Trenchcoat was not released under the Disney name because of its more adult themes, and it, Never Cry Wolf and the international distribution of Dragonslayer are widely regarded as the films that led to the launch of Touchstone Pictures on February 15, 1984.
