Plot summary
John Davies, an art dealer short of money, is staging an exhibition of work by Victor Clare, a sculptor who has not been shown since the Second World War. George Brent admires a bronze nude and insists on buying it, though the piece is already sold. Clare's son Michael, an alcoholic who needs cash, takes an interest in the proceeds, and John tells him what his share will be. John and Michael drive to Cornwall, where Clare's house and studio stand above a disused tin mine, to ask the sculptor for more of his work. Their wives, Millie and Jane, follow separately. At the house the two men meet Clare's model, Marcia, and his wife, Dorothy, and Clare begins pressing Millie to pose for him.
