Plot summary
Jody Norris is a fire warden in London during World War II, keeping watch with Lord Desham, when word comes that someone from her hometown has reached the station. The news brings back Piersen Falls, where she is the town belle. Alec Piersen and Mac Tilton, a traveling salesman, each propose and are turned down, and Alec marries Corinne. Then Captain Bart Cosgrove comes to town for a bond drive, and he and Jody have one night together. Pregnant, she sees a doctor in New York who warns that her life is at risk. She bears their son in secret and tries to arrange an adoption that avoids scandal.
