Biography

Frederick Valk, a German-born stage and screen actor, settled in Britain in the late 1930s and later became a British citizen. He first appeared on the London stage in 1939 and went on to play classic drama, including leading Shakespeare parts. His Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and his Othello drew critical admiration. He received the Ellen Terry Award for best actor in 1946 for his performance in The Brothers Karamazov. He also toured, performing at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada in the 1950s. On screen he never received top billing but took supporting roles in good screen productions, including Dead of Night (1945) and The Colditz Story (1955), as well as The Young Mr. Pitt, Thunder Rock, A Matter of Life and Death, Mrs. Fitzherbert and The Magic Box. He kept his heavy accent, which became a trademark and made him a frequent choice for German or Central European parts.
