Plot summary
In 1940 London, Robert Wilson works as a bookkeeper and his wife Cathy, at home all day, is bored. The war overturns their tedious lives: he joins the Royal Navy and she signs up with the Women's Royal Naval Service, and their shore leaves never coincide. Apart for three years, each becomes much more self-confident. Cathy's assertive new friend Dizzy Clayton helps her break out of her shell, and Cathy begins going out with Dizzy's cousin Richard, a naval architect who falls in love with her, though she stays faithful to her husband. Robert, for his part, grows tougher during his time at sea.

- Perfect Strangers was Deborah Kerr's MGM debut: MGM had bought half her contract after The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, in which she played three roles, and studio boss Louis B. Mayer said upon seeing her performance: "That girl's a star."
- Perfect Strangers was meant to star Donat and Oberon, but by December 1943 Oberon had been replaced by Deborah Kerr because Oberon was still in the U.S.
- Shooting did not begin until May: the script was constantly rewritten to account for changes in the war, Ruggles fell ill with the flu shortly after arriving in England, and Donat was involved in a play; then Donat fell ill and Ruggles left the project after an argument with Korda.
- Perfect Strangers did some location shooting in Scotland but was shot primarily in London, and no subsequent films came from the co-production agreement because Korda bristled at being bossed around by MGM's head of production, Louis B. Mayer.
- Perfect Strangers was the last film Robert Donat made for MGM, and it also gave Roger Moore his uncredited film debut.
