Michael Denison
Biography
Michael Denison was an English actor who made his professional stage debut in 1938 after training at drama school. His career was interrupted by military service in the Second World War, but he returned to establish himself among the leading actors of his generation. He worked mainly in the theater, taking on parts that ranged from Shakespeare and farce to musicals, drawing-room comedies, and thrillers. His film work included the 1952 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. He became familiar to television viewers as the title character in Boyd QC, which ran from 1956 to 1964. He also directed a play, wrote memoirs and biographies, and was appointed CBE in 1983. His final film was Richard Attenborough's Shadowlands in 1993, and he died in 1998.

In 1938 Denison played Lord Fancourt Babberly in Charley's Aunt at Frinton-on-Sea, his first professional stage role. That same year he joined the London Mask company for his West End debut, taking the part of Paris in Troilus and Cressida.

Denison's 1960 revival of Shaw's Candida at the Piccadilly and Wyndham's ran for 160 performances, the longest run the play had ever had on record.

Denison played the title role in the ITV series Boyd QC from 1956 to 1964, a run of 78 episodes in which the first 40 were transmitted live.
