Biography

Robert Shaw was an English actor and writer who started in theater after the Second World War, joining the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre and later the Old Vic, where he played mostly Shakespearean roles. He had a major West End stage success in 1959. His film breakthrough came as the assassin Red Grant in From Russia with Love (1963), and he earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for playing Henry VIII in A Man for All Seasons (1966). Shaw played Doyle Lonnegan, a mobster, in The Sting (1973), and Quint, the shark hunter, in Jaws (1975). He also appeared in The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), Robin and Marian (1976), Black Sunday (1977), and The Deep (1977). As a writer, he received the Hawthornden Prize in 1962 for The Sun Doctor and a Tony Award nomination for his play The Man in the Glass Booth.

Behind the award
In 1967, at the 39th Academy Awards, Shaw was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Henry VIII of England in A Man for All Seasons (1966). He was the second actor to earn that nomination, following Charles Laughton.
Early training
Shaw trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1948, after a brief spell teaching at Glenhow Preparatory School in Yorkshire.
First role
In 1946, Shaw took the role of Angus in a Macbeth production staged at Stratford. He remained with the Stratford company for two seasons.
