Plot summary
A storm drives the ship of Sinbad to the coast of Marabia, where the magician Koura appears on the shore and demands the golden amulet Sinbad took from a flying creature. Sinbad escapes into the city and meets its Grand Vizier, who wears a mask over a disfigured face and holds another piece of the same puzzle. The legend promises that the pieces are the key to a fountain on Lemuria, a lost continent, and that whoever reaches it with them wins youth, protection in darkness and a crown of riches. Sinbad joins the quest, and among the crew are Margiana, the slave girl from his vision, whose palm bears an eye tattoo, and Haroun, her master's son. Koura follows with a ship of his own, and each spell he casts drains his own life.

- To prepare for the live-action fight with a stone statue of Kali, the actors rehearsed with three stuntmen strapped together with a belt, a saber in each hand; Harryhausen then reproduced Kali's fight choreography in his studio, moving a total of 144 arms for each second of the sequence.
- Among the sketches, a charcoal and pencil illustration depicted a fight between a one-eyed centaur and a giant single-horned Neanderthal-like creature; this 8-foot-tall caveman was replaced by a griffin in the final version of the film and appeared in 1977 in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.
- The film won the first Saturn Award ever given for Best Fantasy Film.
- Columbia Pictures did not fully benefit from the film's success, as they had sold off all their interest in its 1974 slate to Bright-Persky Associates.
