Plot summary
At dawn two men run across a beach with their hands bound behind them while a black helicopter sweeps the landscape in search of them. They are MacConnachie and Ansell, fugitives in an unnamed Latin American country. MacConnachie takes charge of the pair, berating Ansell as they cross barren country, and each time the aircraft finds them they break clear of it again. Ansell mentions that he once worked at Fortnum & Mason in London. By night the two slip into a small town and enter a house where a widow sits beside a bed, a basket of bread at her side. At the edge of town, Ansell says he wants to keep traveling with MacConnachie rather than split up.
