Vladek Sheybal

Biography

Vladek Sheybal was a Polish actor who also sang and directed for television and the stage. Raised in Zgierz, near Łódź, he built a reputation after World War II in Polish theaters and cinemas, among them Andrzej Wajda's Kanal (1957). He went to Paris and then Vienna in 1958, and reached Britain in 1959, teaching acting there and taking charge of the Bromley Little Theatre in 1960. His British screen debut came in 1963, as the chess grandmaster Kronsteen in From Russia with Love, a part Sean Connery had recommended him for, and he went on to play villains and character roles in films including Billion Dollar Brain (1967), The Boy Friend (1971), The Wind and the Lion (1975), and Red Dawn (1984). On television he appeared in UFO, Shogun, and Smiley's People, and in 1977 he received the Dracula Society's Hamilton Deane Award for the Supernatural play Night of the Marionettes.

Big break
Sheybal was well known for playing Kronsteen, the chess grandmaster in the James Bond film From Russia with Love, released in 1963. His friend Sean Connery personally recommended him for that role.
Behind the camera
In 1960, Sheybal directed Modest Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina at Oxford University. BBC executives saw the production, and this brought him work directing opera and theater adaptations for British television in the early 1960s.
