Mary Ure
Biography
Mary Ure was a British actress from Glasgow who trained for the stage in London and began her career in the theater, making her London debut in Time Remembered in 1954. Her first screen appearance came in Storm Over The Nile (1955). She became known for dramatic roles, including Alison Porter in John Osborne's Look Back in Anger, which she played in London and on Broadway, earning a Tony Award nomination. She reprised the role in the 1959 film Look Back in Anger and earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Sons and Lovers (1960), becoming the second Scottish-born actress nominated for an Academy Award. Her other films included The Mind Benders (1963), Custer of the West (1967), Where Eagles Dare (1968) and A Reflection of Fear (1972). She also appeared at Stratford in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Othello in 1959 and returned to Broadway in Old Times in 1971.

Early training
Mary Ure trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, which was then at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where Wendy Craig was among her classmates. In 1954, her final year, she won the Carleton Hobbs Bursary for the Radio Drama Company but turned it down.
