Anthony Dawson

Biography

Anthony Dawson was a Scottish actor born in Edinburgh who attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his film debut in They Met in the Dark in 1943, then appeared in British films including The Queen of Spades (1949). In the early 1950s he moved to America, where he played C. A. Swann in the Broadway staging of Dial M for Murder before Alfred Hitchcock chose him for the 1954 film. He became known for supporting villains such as Midnight Lace (1960), Marques Siniestro in The Curse of the Werewolf (1961), and Professor Dent in Dr. No (1962). Terence Young cast him as the body of Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Thunderball (1965) and From Russia with Love (1963), with Eric Pohlmann supplying the voice and Dawson's face unseen. Other Young films included Triple Cross (1966), Red Sun (1971) and The Jigsaw Man (1983). He later appeared in Spaghetti Westerns and Ghoulies II (1987). Dawson died in 1992.
