Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Swashbuckler (1976)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Swashbuckler was shot in Mexico and aboard the Golden Hinde, a replica of the galleon Francis Drake captained from 1577 to 1580 that had sailed five months from England to San Francisco harbor. According to the DVD's special features, it was the only pirate movie filmed aboard an actual ship of that era.
  • Geneviève Bujold took her part in Swashbuckler under her Universal contract, partly to avoid a lawsuit over backing out of an earlier project at the studio, the same reason she appeared in Earthquake. She later said she didn't regret it because Robert Shaw was "a man worth knowing."
  • Anjelica Huston was cast in her role in Swashbuckler over both Martine Beswicke and Barbara Steele, who had been considered for the part.
  • Robert Morgan, a stuntman who lost his leg while making How the West Was Won in 1963, was cast as a one-legged pirate in the film.
  • Original producer Eliot Kastner prepared a pirate script set mostly on shore to avoid the hazards and expense of filming on water, but co-producer Jennings Lang said a pirate movie without boats would be "cheating the public."
