Plot summary
The Beatles are four musicians from Liverpool who spend years performing constantly, at home and in Hamburg, before Brian Epstein takes on their management and the group's records and appearances reach far bigger audiences. Archive footage follows 250 concerts between 1963 and 1966, while interviews bring in Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the band's associates and fans, among them celebrities who describe what the group meant to them. Brian Epstein manages the group, Derek Taylor works as press agent and George Martin produces their records. Around the band are the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Vietnam War, and their films, especially A Hard Day's Night, show the friendly, quick-witted personae they had on stage.

- Apple Corps and Subafilms were sued on 12 September 2016 by representatives of Sid Bernstein, promoter of the Beatles' 1965 Shea Stadium concert, over ownership of the footage, and the suit sought an injunction to block its use in the film. Bernstein, who died in 2013, was said to own the footage as its producer and employer for hire of the Beatles.
- The documentary includes 30 minutes of footage from the Beatles' 1965 Shea Stadium concert, originally shot on 35mm film by Ed Sullivan Productions. Its 11 songs were digitally restored in 4K for the film, with sound remastered by Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin.
