Yoko Ono
Biography
Born in Tokyo, Yoko Ono is a Japanese artist and musician who moved to New York City in 1952 and became involved in the downtown artists scene. She was associated with the Fluxus group and had her first solo exhibition at the AG Gallery in 1961. Her early performance pieces included Cut Piece and The Fog Machine. In 1969 she began a career in popular music, forming the Plastic Ono Band and releasing avant-garde albums. She achieved commercial and critical success with the 1980 album Double Fantasy, which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. She has had twelve singles reach number one on the US Dance charts. She has also received the Oskar Kokoschka Prize and the Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt Human Rights Award. Her later albums include Season of Glass, Starpeace, Rising, and Blueprint for a Sunrise. She has also worked in filmmaking and performance art.

Ono finished at Gakushuin in 1951. She then entered the philosophy program at Gakushuin University, the department's first female student, but she left after two semesters.
A role that slipped away
Ono declined an invitation to join Fluxus because she wanted to remain independent, though George Maciunas had given her first solo exhibition in 1961.

In 1961, Ono gave her first major public performance, a concert featuring radical experimental music and performances at the 258-seat Carnegie Recital Hall.
First role
Ono debuted her seminal performance piece Cut Piece in 1964 at the Yamaichi Concert Hall in Kyoto, where audience members cut off pieces of her clothing.
Early training
Ono's studies at Sarah Lawrence included English literature with Kathryn Mansell, poetry with Alastair Reid, and music composition with André Singer, who was Viennese-trained.
About the name
Ono became known simply as ONO for dance remixes beginning in 2003, dropping her first name in response to the "Oh, no!" jokes that dogged her career.
