Plot summary

The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967, and the album changed the course of music history. Fifty years later, a composer and music historian explores why the record is called innovative, revolutionary and influential. Outtakes from the recording sessions and conversations between the band, material that had never been heard outside Abbey Road, show how the album took shape. He takes the album's music apart and puts it back together so that a listener can hear how it works. He also draws surprising connections between the album and music written over the course of the last thousand years.
